Review Copy Requests

Children's Book Press fulfills review copy requests for media professionals who wish to publish reviews of our books. Please submit your request in writing on your company's letterhead, and provide as much detail as possible about your intention and your publication. To request a review copy, email publicity@childrensbookpress.org.

Permissions Requests

If you would like to reproduce text or art from Children's Book Press books, please submit your request in writing. Be sure to refer to the specific pages you would like to reproduce, your intention regarding the reproduced work, your budget (if any) for the project, deadlines, and, if you plan on using the materials in a printed publication, list price and print run. To submit requests, email sales@childrensbookpress.org or fax to (415) 543-3394.

Desk Copy Requests

Children's Book Press provides free samples to professors who are adopting our books for a class. Please use our Desk Copy Form to submit your request.

Unsolicited Submission Policy (effective August 2009)

At this time, Children’s Book Press publishes picture books that feature Latino/Chicano, African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American, multi-racial and other minority and new immigrant communities, authored and illustrated whenever possible by individuals from within the cultural communities represented in our books. 

Restrictions
Children's Book Press reviews unsolicited submissions that meet our editorial focus. However, due to the volume of submissions and our limited personnel resources, we cannot respond to submissions individually unless we are considering them for acquisition. Please, no telephone or email inquiries.

Details and Processing

Submit via hard copy mail only. We do not accept any materials via email or on a drop-in basis. 

Do not include a SASE for your materials. You may, however, include a self-addressed, stamped postcard which we will return to you to confirm receipt. Include a cover letter with your full contact information including an email address.

Do not send original artwork, slides, or irreplaceable copies of your manuscript, as your submitted materials will not be returned. Children's Book Press is not responsible or liable for any unsolicited materials sent in for review.

If we wish to acquire a manuscript, response time can be up to 6 months. If yours is a simultaneous submission, please indicate that in your cover letter.

If you do not hear from us within 6 months of our receiving your materials, please assume that your manuscript is not being considered for publication.

Artists / Illustrators 
Send color photocopies, one sheets, or postcards (include the address of your online portfolio if you have one). Do not under any circumstances send original artwork, slides, or other irreplaceable materials. Updated information or samples of new work may be submitted (via postcard, etc) as necessary.

Tips for Authors 
Please familiarize yourself with our books. If your story shares very similar plotlines, themes, or motifs with books in our backlist, we are likely to decline it. We are, in general, not looking to acquire folktales, myths, legends, or fairytales. We also do not publish straight nonfiction, how-to books, or chapter books. Our books are 24 or 32 pages long with words counts between 200-1500 words in a given language. We typically supply the artists for the stories we publish.
