March 2009

Congraulations, Juan Felipe Herrera, poet extraordinaire!

Children's Book Press author Juan Felipe Herrera is no stranger to winning awards for his mango-sweet words -- we can hardly keep up with the praise that keeps rolling his way.  Recently, Juan Felipe received the annual poetry prize from the National Book Critics Circle for his collection "Half the World In Light", published by the University of Arizona Press. Congratulations, Juan Felipe!

Celebrate Women’s History Month this March!

March is the month to celebrate the many contributions of women and girls to our society. We’d like to highlight one woman who made a difference to a whole city of readers — Pura Belpré, New York City’s first Latina librarian. Recently, Lucía Gonzalez and Lulu Delacre brought Ms. Belpré’s story to life in their award-winning book, The Storyteller’s Candle.

CABE 2009 Recap

Children’s Book Press exhibited at the 34th Annual California Association of Bilingual Education Conference from Feb. 25-28, 2009 in Long Beach.

Attendance was WAY down this year (we all know about California's budget problems). But I was glad to see the teachers who did attend, and spend time with our amazing authors.

Welcome to Many Voices!

Welcome to Children's Book Press, and welcome to our blog! We've been interacting with our community of readers for almost 35 years, and we hope this new forum will give you -- parents, teachers, librarians, storytellers, and art lovers -- a chance to join the conversation about what's going on at CBP and in the world of multicultural and bilingual children's publishing. The population of our country is becoming more and more diverse every year, and books like ours have never been more necessary in our schools, libraries, and homes.
