The Coretta Scott King Book Award Curriculum Resource Center
Earlier this month, we blogged about the 40th Anniversary of the Coretta Scott King Awards. Now, thanks to TeachingBooks.net, there is a fantastic resource that gives readers a chance to hear directly from authors and illustrators about the books they created. (Click through to read more.)
The Coretta Scott King Book Award Curriculum Resource Center is a free, online resource center for educators and families, featuring over 250 original recordings with the award-winning authors and illustrators and hundreds of lesson plans. You'll hear directly from African American authors and illustrators as they talk about and read from their books.
There's definitely plenty to discover, including original audio interviews with Dr. Maya Angelou, Dr. Toni Morrison, Walter Dean Myers, and Kadir Nelson, just to name a few. Of course, we're thrilled that two Children's Book Press illustrators are also included in the Resource Center.
Listen to Michele Wood, illustrator of i see the rhythm (winner of the 1999 award for illustration), discuss her process of creating one of the paintings in the book.
You can also hear illustrator, JoeSam talk about why he loved creating the art for The Invisible Hunters (a 1998 Honor Book for illustration).
Thanks to everyone at TeachingBooks.net for creating a truly valuable and unique resource that will be enjoyed by countless readers in the years to come.
