For fifteen years, her stories have expressed her pride in her rich Mexican American heritage while transcending cultural barriers. Since its original release in 1990, Family Pictures has sold over 400,000 copies and garnered awards and praise from the American Library Association, the Library of Congress, and many others. Through her vivid paintings, Carmen Lomas Garza shares her unique childhood memories, like picking nopal cactus with her grandfather, making tamales in her family’s kitchen, and taking a swing at a piñata.

CARMEN LOMAS GARZA is one of the most prominent Mexican American painters working today. Born and raised in Kingsville, Texas, she decided at the age of thirteen to pursue a career as a visual artist. Carmen’s paintings and papel picado (cut-paper art) have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United Sates and Mexico. She lives in San Francisco, CA.
