Children’s Book Press Receives $25,000 Grant from AT&T Foundation

San Francisco, CA—Children’s Book Press, a nonprofit publisher of first-voice bilingual children’s literature, received a $25,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation to implement a comprehensive redesign of its visual branding and website. The award is part of the 2007 AT&T Foundation Excelerator Competitive Grants Program, an initiative designed to help nonprofits fully integrate technology into their ongoing operations and community outreach.

“This incredibly generous award is very timely as we are just now in the throes of further increasing our visibility, extending our partnership network, and sharing our impressive list of children’s literature with an even wider audience,” says Lorraine Garcia-Nakata, Executive Director and Publisher of Children’s Book Press.

Founded in 1975, Children’s Book Press (CBP) has been a pioneer in creating authentic, first-voice literature that aims to give young readers a sense of their history, culture, and importance. The award-winning press currently publishes cutting-edge literature from the Latino, African American, Asian American, and Native American communities.

“CBP is one of those rare nonprofit organizations with a unique niche mission focused on increasing literacy needs by bringing forth a multicultural reading experience to our most diverse populations,” says Ileana Winterhalter, AT&T Foundation’s Associate Director for Constituency Relations.

In its 33-year history, the press has continually won accolades for its unique books, most notably the Pura Belpré and Coretta Scott King Awards, given by the American Library Association; the Ezra Jack Keats Award; and most recently the 2007 Jane Addams Award for the book A Place Where Sunflowers Grow.

With over 95 titles and a commitment to community outreach, Children’s Book Press offers generations of children a culturally diverse and inclusive reading experience. The AT&T Foundation’s support will play a major role in spreading the word about the Press’ one-of-a-kind resources, says Garcia-Nakata, so that many more young people will have access to books that reflect their experience.
