Quinito's Neighborhood/El Vecindario de Quinito is an innocent and
insightful look into a young boy's understanding of community. In this
unique neighborhood journey each job is important, each gender is equally
able, and each person is cherished. Written in both English and Spanish, the
book encourages readers to examine the boundless array of careers, and
inspires children and their classrooms to explore and appreciate their own
school and neighborhood communities. Quinito's Neighborhood received a
starred review in the School Library Journal, and was a 2005 Críticas
recommended book for Hispanic Heritage Month.
Developed by teachers, the guide contains four sections:
- What's It All About?: Describes the book, highlights thematic units
of study, and provides information about the book's author, Ina Cumpiano and
illustrator, José Ramírez.
- Reading Activities: Includes lessons that introduce the book to the
class and prompt critical thinking about the book's themes. Also encourages
students to find the similarities and differences among professions.
- Cross Curricular Activities: Helps students make connections
between the book and content areas such as language arts, social studies,
visual art, math, and science. Includes fun activities such as the "science
behind the cake" and conducting interviews.
- Resources: Directs you to other literature, websites, and
audio-visual resources that are related to the book's themes, including
additional first day of school activities and tips from the pros.
"Reading Communities" grew out of the firm belief in the importance of
classroom instruction based on high-quality, multicultural literature.
Children's Book Press developed the guide to foster literacy and a love of
learning in children.
