About the Book

This remarkable book brings together fourteen outstanding artists from different communities to honor the ancestors who most touched their lives and to pay playful tribute to the influential and loving people who came before us. The ancestors are as diverse as the artists themselves. Caryl Henry honors her grandmother and Madame C. J. Walker, America's first Black woman millionaire. Nancy Hom honors her father who worked in a Chinese restaurant but possessed the strength of a mighty warrior. George Crespo honors his Puerto Rican grandfather and his Taino ancestors. Mira Reisberg honors her Jewish grandparents who were killed in the Holocaust and the relatives in spirit who shaped her life. Through stories, art, and photographs, Honoring Our Ancestors will inspire children and their families to honor their own ancestors—so that they can gain strength from the past. As we reach out to the future, this book will encourage us to ask each other: "Who do you honor?"

Praise

"A brilliant collage of pictures and stories as diverse as its creators."
      —Skipping Stones

"Far from generic reverence, the tributes ring with truthful detail. The pictures are as lively, colorful, and diverse as the stories, blending realism, metaphor, and memory."
     —Booklist

"This is an intriguing look at a selection of living artists and their work, and the format and focus of this piece may well be a springboard to more relevant millennium projects than guessing about the future."
—The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"Although done in individual styles, the art's crisp lines, bold colors, and commonality of feeling create a visual unity unusual to albums of this sort, a unity reinforced by the artists' unforced, natural-sounding statements."
      —Kirkus Reviews
