About the Book

Naklili loves his young wife Kati so much that when she dies, Naklili resolves to follow her to Mother Scorpion Country—the land of the spirits. To Kati, Mother Scorpion Country is paradise. But Naklili does not belong to the land of the spirits. He cannot see the beauty of Mother Scorpion Country; to his eyes, everything is ugly. And so he returns to his village—but once he arrives he realizes that he no longer belongs there, either. His fellow villagers no longer understand him. Caught between the two worlds, Naklili chooses to return to Kati forever. This tender folktale originates from the oral tradition of the Miskito Indians on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua.
