About the Book

A Native American tale of family love and forgiveness. Baby Rattlesnake wants a rattle like his older siblings have. His crying keeps the rattlesnake elders up all night so his parents give him a new rattle. Sure enough, he misuses his new rattle. When he tries to scare the chief's daughter, she steps on his rattle and crushes it. Sad and defeated, he returns to his forgiving family who give him "big rattlesnake hugs." Available in Spanish (as Viborita de cascabel), in English, and in a new bilingual English/Spanish version.

32 pages Full-color illustrations 9" x 8" (bilingual 9 1/4" x 11 1/4") Ages 6 and up

Praise

"Originally published in seperate English and Spanish editions a number of years ago, this newly published bilingual edition provides a real service to school and public libraries strapped for cash . . . The retellings in both English and Spanish are fluid and fast moving. Reisberg's illustrations evoke the southwestern desert . . . and vibrate with a childlike sense of glee. Both earlier versions of the book have proved to be popular, and so should this one."
—Criticas

"Humorous and warm, this story is perfect for reading aloud to primary-grade children."
—The Reading Teacher

"The story is fast moving, dramatic, and economically told … [the] colors are deftly combined to make this book bright and attractive. This short tale will be a welcomed addition to story hour collections."
—School Library Journal

"Even very small children will understand—and profit from—this deceptively simple story's valuable lesson."
—Publishers Weekly

"This is the kind of book to delight both children and older folks who have the privilege to introduce the tale, over and over again."
—The Bloomsbury Review

"The vigorous bold colors and patterns appear nearly three-dimensionalăso much so that you could just reach out and try to touch the sand."
       —San Francisco Chronicle
